DESIGNER RAIL INSTALLATION TIPS |
FOR HARDWOODS

FOR HARDWOODS & SOFTWOODS
|
INSTALLATION OVERVIEW: > Measure and cut top and bottom sub-rails separately. (don't assume that sub-rails are the same length as the rail posts may not be plum) > Lay sub-rails for each section side by side on the ground splitting the difference in length if there are uneven sub-rails. > Measure to the direct center point of the longest sub-rail (if applicable) and make a small mark with a pencil. > Work out on both sides of this point marking every 4-3/4" to the ends. These marks will serve as screw placement for the Balustar connector or center point for drilling a 3/4" hole. This measurement will ensure a 3-3/4" opening once the Designer Rail balusters are placed. Most building codes do not allow more than a 4" opening in any part of the rail system. > After the Balustars are mounted or holes are drilled (softwoods) place Designer Rail balusters at their respective points.
STAIR INSTALLATION OVERVIEW: > It is recommended to install stair sections including stringers and treads prior to installing Designer Rail on stairs. > Place sub-rails on stair section and repeat measurement element from above instructions. > Drill a very shallow 3/4" diameter hole 90 degrees at each mark using a Forstner bit for Ipe or paddle bit for softwoods. (see illustration below) > The shallow hole drilled at a 90 degree angle will conceal the straight cut of the Designer Rail baluster. > After drilling all holes, mount a Balustar fastener in the center of each hole. > The sub-rail is now ready to accept the Designer Rail Baluster.
